The Unsung Heroes of Everyday

In the 21st century life is so fast paced with the advent of technology, mass media and communication, most of our time is taken up with entertainment and socialising. Other times is just plain old hard work or studies or even family time and household chores. We are just passing each day so fast that we don’t even realise it – Half the year of 2014 has passed us by.

This is my attempt in slowing things down – Taking notice of people around us whom we would hardly notice. But thank God for them as they make our lives a smooth ride.

We meet them everyday, at every establishment, at every interaction. They are everyday people just like you and me. The people I am talking about are the Telephone operators who connect your calls, the doorman who holds the door open for you, the person who delivers your newspaper every morning, or the guy who cleans up your table after you’ve finished dining at a restaurant. There are numerous more as such whose work makes our lives much easier. How often have we realised their value in our lives?

Almost everyday, I meet an elevator (lift) man whose job is to help press the button to the right floor. Sometimes he would guide people to right office floor, cause they missed the placard which describes which office is on which floor. At times in the rush of the moment we miss things. I miss almost every time to tell the lift man which floor I want to get off on, but he remembers which floor I get off on – just as he remembers every other person who visit every other floor. How often have we taken the time to thanked them for the little they do for us. In the eyes of the world he hardly exists, no songs of appreciation would be written about him – But In the eyes of God, he’s a Hero.

Why Hero? cause he saves our time and effort required to find the floor we are looking for, cause he is spending his time in the service of others. That’s a Hero.

There is another friend of mine, a teenager. He helps out at a church. He’s a volunteer, an un-paid person. His job is to hold the door open for those who enter to attend the service. And without fail I see him sunday after sunday, next to the door. A smile on his face as he helps others walk in. As I see people hastily coming in to fill the seats/pews. We hardly notice the kindness and assistance we receive from others. Let’s slow down and start observing people around us. And be thankful to God for them in our lives.

The God of Small Things

Even as I write this with thankfulness in my heart. There is the other side of the coin.

Our God is the God of small things, wether it’s the staff of Moses, the small pebbles of David, the five loaves of a little boy or even everyday people as small as mustard seeds. It’s the little things that matter. It’s the little things of everyday which make up the big picture, the big tomorrow. This reminds me of a phrase from the movie ‘Evan Almighty’: “God says, ‘How do we change the world? by ‘one Act of Random Kindness at a time.’ “

The little act of kindness we show towards others goes a long way. There are acts for which we are recognised and appreciated which is feels good and great. But the most satisfaction I get are the ones which is not accounted for. People may not know it, but Heaven keeps record.  “So that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.“ – Matthew 6:4. Jesus said it in the context of giving, but I feel we can just as well apply in this context as well, as to give our time and energy for others.

The video above captures the essence of what it means to help people, who in turn help others. By this ripple effect we can make the world a better place. It’s not just a Michael Jackson song. It’s a whole new lifestyle we ought to live.

God cares about each of us individually. Let us also care about every individual we come across. Let’s Change the World with Acts of Random Kindness. Let’s be a Hero to someone from today to everyday.
