My God, My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me? – What Does It Mean?

“About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?”(which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).” – Matthew 27:46

What did Jesus mean when He said those words? Most say that Jesus was expressing His feelings of abandonment as God placed the sins of the world on Him – and because of that, God had to “turn away” from Jesus. As Jesus was feeling that weight of sin, He was experiencing a separation from God for the only time in all of eternity.

With respect to all the various views held by genuine Christ followers, I’d like to present an alternative to this understanding.
